About Me
Thank You Dan Mahowald for writing this story about my son. You are a genuine gentleman.

Since this story was written Shane had another amputation on July 23, 2007, and also underwent three major lung surgeries from 6-16 to present. The last surgery.. a double-lung surgery removing a total of twelve tumors.

Meeting a Hero on Golf's Special Journey

It took 44 years of life on this planet to experience my 1st miracle. His name is Shane Christensen and his story will break your heart, mend it back together again, and inspire that emotion deep inside your being to look at life in a different way.

For those of us who have had the privilege of bringing children into this world, we all share that intense feeling of hope that they will live their life with the gift of good health. When they do get sick, it throws off our rhythm, makes us feel out of synch. Our focus and attention quickly turn to looking after them, caring for them, and nursing them back to health. My wife Maria and I have 2 children, Erik 14 and Alicia 13. Minus a few bouts with the flu, some bumps and bruises, both have enjoyed a clean bill of health.

Shane's journey has been a much different one. In late 2005, he began to experience pain in his right leg. Life to that point has been pretty close to normal. Growing up in Bend, Oregon as part of a close family that puts family first, Shane was cruising through life. Active in sports, a high achieving student, a great son to mom Ranae and dad Eric, a thoughtful and caring older brother to Ciarra and Kenneth.

The pain in Shane's leg could not be more than that familiar pain many young boys experience as they grow rapidly and develope. But the pain persisted and intensified so Ranae and Eric decided to have it checked out by a doctor. The day was January 3rd, 2006. The next day, Shane was diagnosed with Tibia High Grade Chondroblastic Osteosarcoma, a highly aggressive and life threatening form of terminal bone cancer. It attacks the tibia (shin bone) spreading rapidly throughout the body and eventually attacks the lungs. It came without warning and for no logical reason. Three out of one million kids are diagnosed with this rare form of cancer each year.

As the world was ripping apart around the Christensen family, Shane was already beginning the process of piecing it back together. I'm not sure where mental toughness and resiliency come from and why some people have them and some do not. Shane's toughness and resiliency operate at one speed only, FULL SPEED. Although I did not know him at the time, I do know what he was thinking. If I may be so bold as to summarize.

"This terrible thing happened to me. I do not feel sorry for myself. There is no time for that. The important thing is that I have all these amazing people around me that will help me get through it. I am committed to staying positive, resilient, and do not understand the concept of quitting or complaining. My attitude will save my life."

After his diagnosis, the doctors acted immediately and prescribed chemotherapy. This treatment puts a devastating strain on the human body. For an entire year, Shane was bombarded with chemicals that flowed through a central port connected to his heart. On January 6, 2006, the doctors performed a biopsy on his tibia and it was determined that he would have his leg amputated on March 24, 2006. The surgery was performed by Chief of Staff Dr. Krajbich and took 10 hours to complete. Shane continued his chemotherapy treatments and a very slow healing process. He had a total of nine blood transfusions and four platelet transfusions. The chemotherapy made him so sick that he developed Neutropenia, a blood disorder that people can get while being treated for cancer with chemotheraphy.

My job at SAP America takes me all over the Pacific Northwest working with some of the region's greatest companies. John Springer and Nicole Ewing from Nike Golf called me this summer asking that we participate in a golf event to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon, dinner following the event. Shane was asked to take the podium and say a few words. I was immediately impressed with his poise and confident demeanor. He began by thanking all of us for supporting his healing process. Just 72 hours earlier, Shane had been through his second major surgery and despite the intense pain he was feeling, was in front of us with great attitude and a abundance of energy.Inside, my emotions were racing. Despite my best efforts, I could not seem to hold back my tears. Fortunately, I had lots of company and everyone listening was equally moved. I'm not sure why, but when emotions in a room are intense, I have always been able to feel them. The emotional energy present that night was overpowering. How a young kid who had experienced so much adversity and loss can be so positive and upbeat was utterly amazing to all of us.

I look to the sky and what do I see?
A castle, a rainbow, and dreams for me,
An end to this battle that I must fight,
An end to cancer is not far away,
It will be here someday... someday.

5-6-08 cancer is back. 6-16-08 removed a total of six tumors from both lungs. 9-10-08 removed 6 more tumors from both lungs. 11-3-08 scans and appointments all day at DCH. I am strapping on my battle boots and I am going to win this war on cancer!

Keeping The Faith~
Dedicated To:
My friends, Boey & Trey who have been watching over me, and all my WARRIOR friends out there fighting this terrible monster!
Our Story
Shane's Story
6.23.08: Update From the first day Shane got diagnosed (1-3-2006) to now, he has been a inspiration to all that know him. Shane has Chrondroblastic Osteosarcoma a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. On May 6, 2008 he relapsed. The cancer is now in his lungs. Shane's story is one of courage, strength, and hope for a cure from this terrible enemy. Shane has been through not one, but two amputations within a year from each other. Shane's first year of chemotherapy was very harsh on his body, and made him quite ill having many blood and platelet transfusions. Shane did get a lot of opportunities to do things while in the hospital, but he was just too ill. Shane would always pass on the opportunities to other children on the floor who were doing better, it made him feel good to do this. He even passed along a opening pitch at a Beavers game. He spoke at a Ronald McDonald House Charity golf event (two days after his second amputation). Our first family outing since Shane got sick we were invited to appeared on ABC's Extreme Makeover Home Edition" through Sparrow Clubs USA and Shane helped build a serenity pond for "Boey" she was diagnosed the same month and year as Shane and we sadly lost her 12-28-07 she was a true warrior and friend. Shane even golfed in an event (The SAP Invitational) for The Ernie Els Fancourt Foundation to help other children in other countries. He has shown us all great strength and courage. We are so thankful for everyone's love, support, and prayers through our new journey in life. Shane finally received his leg May 7th 2008. Shane’s first surgery was on May 20th to remove the cancer from the right lung and two weeks after that surgery he had another one on the left lung (on June 16th). As of June 16th SHANE IS CANCER FREE! His Laparoscopic surgery was successful and three tumors were removed on his left lung, one of tumors was large and deep but they were able to remove it. Shane's recovery may be a bit longer than expected, since these other two tumors took everyone by surprise. Shane will be getting ready for whatever treatments his parents and the doctors choose. They are still working through several options. As his mom Ranae says, “My son has cancer, this is a bad thing, but he is strong and he beat it once… and he can beat it again!”

Cancer Warrior Shane Class of 2009

Shane was out and about Saturday, only a miracle could have produced the results weve seen. Shane continues to grow stronger and refuses to give into osteosarcoma and continues to win not missing a beat. He was up early Saturday morning to meet Nurse Diane, her husband and friends for a day out in the field, four wheel driving, shooting targets and carrying on as if it was just another day, two brothers hanging out together. Praise God from who all Blessings flow. We are so thankful to see him g… Continue

Shoes

Shoes
I am wearing a pair of shoes.
They are ugly shoes.
Uncomfortable shoes.
I hate my shoes.
Each day I wear them, and each day I wish I had another pair.
Some days my shoes hurt so bad that I don’t think I can take another step.
Yet, I continue to wear them.
I get funny looks wearing these shoes.
I can tell in others eyes that they’re glad they are my shoes and not
theirs.
T hey never talk about my shoes.
To learn how awful my shoes are might make them uncomfortable.
To truly understand these… Continue

Cancer Warrior Shane

Good Friday turned into A Great Friday!

Good Morning to all my Family & Friends,

Shane was up early under the hood and eager to diagnose the mechanical problems with my car. He has a code scanner coupled with the internet ..it's amazing what he has taught himself to do, his prognosis was to replace the battery and restart the system, however due to physical limitations, the cold weather, and not being out of bed for so long limited his valiant attack and he quickly returned to his room and fell fast asleep.

Yesterday afternoon w… Continue
